How to Choose the Right Micro Boring Head for Your Job

A micro boring head helps you make a bore to an exact size, with a smooth finish. But there are many sizes and types, so choosing the right one can feel hard. This guide keeps it simple.

1. Check your bore size range

Every head works only within a size range. Look at the smallest and the largest bore you need to make. Pick a head that covers both, and keep some margin. For example, Boro-Tech offers heads such as 6–125 mm, 16–150 mm and 25–250 mm.

2. Match the shank to your machine

The shank must fit your spindle. Common types are BT, CAT and R8. If the shank does not match, you will need an adaptor, and an adaptor can reduce rigidity. Choose the correct shank from the start.

3. Look at the accuracy you need

Some jobs need a very fine adjustment, and some do not. Check how fine the head adjusts. Boro-Tech boring heads are available in 2 micron and 5 micron options. For tight tolerance work, choose the finer option.

4. Think about the cutting tools

The head holds the tool, and the tool does the cutting. Check which inserts or bars come with the head, and whether they suit your material. Indexable tools are easy to change and save time.

5. Decide: single head or complete kit

A complete kit comes with the head, shank, tools and keys in one case. It is a good choice if you work on many different jobs. If you only repeat one job, a single head may be enough.

Quick checklist

  • Bore size range covers your smallest and largest job
  • Shank matches your machine (BT, CAT or R8)
  • Accuracy suits your tolerance
  • Tools suit your material
  • Kit or single head, based on your work
